Howard (Jack) Burgess

Howard (Jack) Burgess (Age 101)

On Wednesday, April 11, 2012, Howard (Jack) Burgess, beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather, passed away in Ashburn, Virginia.

Jack was born 101 years ago on 12/9/1910 in Devils Lake, North Dakota, coming home from the hospital in a horse and buggy. He was raised on the farm where he learned the value of hard work and importance of family.

Jack was the loving and devoted husband to the late Lillian Burgess for 67 years. They had two children, the late Robert Burgess and Jane Burgess Ensminger. Jack worked as a construction engineer for Carnation until retirement at age 70. He lived in Littleton, Colorado for 30 years and has lived with family in Ashburn, Virginia for the past 6 years.

Jack’s secret to life was to always have a hobby, keeping his mind and body active up until the end. He was an inspiration to us all; driving his Mustang and playing golf at the age of 101. People thought he was 30 years younger than he was, and boy did he like that! Jack loved to spend time with his family playing cards, playing pool, doing puzzles, woodworking, fishing, and reading.

Jack is survived by his daughter Jane Ensminger, son in-law Jim Ensminger, three grandchildren and their spouses, Amy and Ben Franks, Robyn and Eric Nguyen, and Scott and Gaby Ensminger, and six great grandchildren – Josh, Emma, Hailey, Jack, Hannah, and Sophia. We will miss him dearly but will cherish all the wonderful memories and special times we were able to share. We consider ourselves lucky to have learned so much and been loved by such a wonderful man!

Memorial Services are planned for Friday April 20, 2012 3:00 at Our Savior’s Way Lutheran Church in Ashburn Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Capital Hospice, 209 Gibson St. NW, Leesburg, VA 20176.
